Almost
 
all bicycle disc brakes to date have utilized a closed hydraulic system. Unfortunately, the closed system doesn't respond well in high energy downhill situations. Heat generated during braking causes the brake fluid to expand which prevents full piston retraction. This can lead to "free running drag" and even brake lock up.

But the Hayes patented open system allows the increased fluid volume to flow through the port timing hole into a fluid reservioir (see figure 1). Our caliper pistons completely retract even during the most severe conditions. There is no "free running drag" and no possibility of the brakes locking up.
 

Unlike
 
many disc brake systems that use a floating mount, Hayes has a fixed mount design. With our fixed mount, two caliper pistons apply pad pressure on both sides of the disc and, more importantly, retract from both sides (see figure 2a). But in a floating mount design, a single caliper piston applies pad pressure and retracts on one side only. This leaves the non-piston side pad in contact with the disc causing an annoying rubbing noise (see figure 2b).

And because Hayes' pads are attached to the pistons, the combination of fixed mount and positive pad attachment means there'll be no noisy "free-running drag," no unwanted pad wear and no loss of speed. Our brake pads are also totally self-adjusting. As they wear, the caliper pistons automatically slide outward on the square seals to adjust for the reduced pad thickness.
 

Most one-piece disc designs warp when subjected to hot and heavy downhill racing. So we challenged our design team to create a lightweight disc that could handle downhill demands. After some 52 designs were evaluated using finite element analysis, a totally awesome stainless steel disc design was born. It's a patented space-age concept that allows it to be cross-country light and still take the heat of heavy downhill braking without warping. Nothing can touch it!

Other brake systems use organic friction materials in their brake pads to insulate the caliper from the heat generated during braking. Unfortunately, their performance falls off dramatically in wet conditions and they wear rapidly in dirty and muddy environments. But Hayes developed a special frictional material for Harley-Davidson® motorcycles that provides the same positive braking...dry, wet or muddy. Plus, our non-organic pads provide longer life...especially in dirty and muddy conditions. You'll also like our quick pad change...it can be done in seconds without tools!
